Cardiff Airport has been at this location for over sixty years when the land in the area was taken over by the air ministry to set up a wartime training base for RAF Spitfire pilots. The original Cardiff airport was located at Pengham Moors  from the 1930’s to the early 1950’s. One of the first scheduled flights from Cardiff airport was operated by Aer Lingus with flights from Cardiff to Dublin. A new terminal building was added and the number of flights from Cardiff increased to new destinations such as France, Belfast and Cork, There was also a growth in the number of flights from Cardiff to the holiday destinations in Spain.

In 1965 the local council took over the running of Cardiff Airport and in the early 1970’s Cardiff got its first transatlantic flight. The main runway was doubled in length and this enabled the new wide body jets to access Cardiff airport for the first time. Since then the runway was increased in size again to enable even more modern aircraft to access the airport (1986)
